Kevin MacKay | Artist Statement
Canada, 1975–Present

Kevin MacKay’s art exists in the luminous space between memory and becoming. With bold lines, radiant colours, and a distinctly human pulse, his work echoes the emotional terrain of those willing to feel deeply — from the soft quiet of grief to the ecstatic brilliance of joy.

His early pieces reflect a raw intuition for composition and expression, dating back to childhood, while his latest works fuse symbolism, abstraction, and stained-glass sensibility to explore what it means to be alive in a fractured world. Whether he’s painting a tree reaching toward light, or a chorus of faces locked in shared emotion, MacKay’s language is colour — but his subject is always connection.

At once tribal and modern, cosmic and rooted, his art invites you to see yourself — not just as individuals, but as part of something collective and sacred. In a time of disconnection, his work is a call back to earth, to feeling, and to each other.

Themes:
– Emotional contrast: joy, hope, despair, wonder, rage, stillness

Often on each piece begins on paper or canvas, photographs or digital canvas, usually with bold black contours and saturated colour fields.

Current Focus:
Blending expressionist figures with Indigenous-inspired forms and stained-glass structure to create what he calls empathic geometry — visual stories that hold both feeling and form. More online.

Artwork Series Title: In All Of Us God Is Home

By Kevin MacKay

This piece is a radiant invocation of unity — a visual affirmation that divinity resides not in the distance, but within the interconnected web of us.

Each figure, abstract yet unmistakably human, rises from the earth like prayerful stalks, blooming with vibrant purpose. The swirling heads and rooted stems speak to both our individuality and our shared ground, creating a dance between the seen and the sacred. The intense contrast of color — purples of mystery, reds of heart, oranges of life-force — suggests a garden where spirit and self coexist.

The composition feels both ceremonial and intimate, a gathering of souls in quiet knowing. Their posture says: we carry light, we carry longing, we carry home. There are no boundaries between them, only color and flow, implying that identity doesn’t divide — it diversifies the divine.

This is not just a painting — it is a remembering. A return to the sacred within the self, and the self within the collective. Here, God is not something to seek. God is already here, blooming in all of us.

Just Be

Artwork Series Title: Just Be

By Kevin MacKay

Just Be is a visual meditation on presence — a quiet series that distills the human experience down to its most essential form: being. Each piece uses minimalist linework, organic flow, and pockets of vivid color to express what words often cannot: the stillness beneath the noise, the self beneath the striving. There is no narrative urgency here — only shapes suspended in space, droplets falling, energy dispersing, and silence taking shape.

The series invites you to pause. To exhale. To surrender the compulsion to fix, explain, or perform. With titles like Be, Drip, One, Letting Go, and Life, each image becomes a moment of truth — a visual breath, a soft permission to exist without needing to do anything more.

In its simplicity, Just Be holds depth. It speaks to grief and growth, identity and impermanence, and the beauty of unguarded presence. These pieces are not just seen — they are felt. A reminder that sometimes, the bravest thing we can do is nothing at all.

Muskoka

Artwork Series Title: Muskoka

By Kevin MacKay

Muskoka is a visual meditation on relationship, resilience, and rootedness. In this series, Kevin MacKay draws on the enduring symbol of Muskoka — standing together, yet each uniquely shaped by time, weather, and space. The trees bend with grace but do not break, their roots anchored in stone, their branches reaching beyond the frame. The water surrounding them reflects not just the sky above, but the shared stillness and movement of their bond.

Each variation in the series captures a different emotional resonance: sunrise, storm light, solitude, flight. Yet together, the works whisper a common truth — that strength is not always loud, and belonging does not require symmetry. The number three suggests more than a trio; it becomes a symbol of wholeness, of the spaces between us, and the unseen threads that connect.

Rendered in bold black lines and luminous colour, Muskoka invites us to see ourselves — not as isolated figures, but as part of a living, breathing landscape of memory, presence, and becoming.

Only Joy

Artwork Series Title: Only Joy

By Kevin MacKay

The Only Joy series is a bold and exuberant celebration of movement, colour, and the human spirit. Each silhouette, cast in unapologetic black, dances mid-air in defiance of gravity and gloom, surrounded by floating circles of vibrant reds, pinks, purples, and electric blues. These joyful orbs represent moments of freedom—memories, dreams, laughter, and the uncontainable energy of being fully alive. The figures, undefined yet universally human, are immersed in play and spontaneity, reminding us that joy doesn’t require permission. There’s no background noise of context—just space, presence, and the art of letting go. It’s a reminder that sometimes, against all odds, joy insists on being felt. That the body knows how to celebrate, even when the world forgets. This series is a dance between shadow and delight—and in this moment, only joy remains.

We Are Canadian

Artwork Series Title: We Are Canadian

By Kevin MacKay

This collection — bold, vibrant, deeply rooted — is more than a celebration of land. It is a meditation on what it means to belong.

Each piece in the We Are Canadian series blends the raw beauty of our natural landscapes with the emotional depth of human presence. From the resilient evergreens and sacred waters to the fires of transformation and silhouettes of togetherness, these works echo our collective story — a story written in sky, stone, flame, and heart.

Through sweeping lines and saturated colour, Kevin MacKay’s visual language speaks to a uniquely Canadian truth: that identity is not just formed in cities and borders, but in the quiet places — beside a lake at dusk, beneath the northern stars, or walking hand-in-hand into a horizon that belongs to all of us.

At hilove.one, I believe art is one of the most honest forms of connection. It reveals the quiet parts of ourselves, calls us to remember who we are, and offers a mirror to the beauty we carry inside. These creations do just that. They remind us that being Canadian isn’t just a nationality — it’s a relationship. To the land. To one another. And to the infinite quiet places within.

This is where story meets stillness. Where land meets light. Where the heart learns to speak again — in colour, in silence, and in love.

Earth Tribe

Artwork Series Title: Earth Tribe

By Kevin MacKay

Art That Feels. Faces That Remember.

This is how the Earth feels — when we listen.

Every face in this series tells a story — of love, of passion, of faith, of grief. Some cry. Some burn. Some hold the still gaze of truth. All are connected by one radiant thread — a golden light at the center, swirling outward, reminding us that no matter how divided we may seem, something timeless holds us together.

You are invited to explore this collection not just with your eyes, but with your own inner knowing. These are not portraits. They are reflections. Of us. Of now. Of the quiet remembering that we are not separate from the Earth — we are expressions of it.

Crafted in devotion. Coloured by presence. Rooted in hilove.one. This is the Earth Tribe: Hope, Peace, Joy and Love.

Elephant

The Elephant Series
By Kevin Lee MacKay

This is not just a series — it is a story.
It begins with presence. With a mother elephant lying down, her body curved in exhaustion, yet her eyes open and full of knowing. As the journey unfolds, we follow a herd across scorched land, their shapes softened by dust and memory. Then, suddenly, they are gone. All but one.

In the final piece, a lone elephant stands, staring directly at us — not with anger, but with a warning. Her gaze pierces through time and illusion, asking humanity to see what it has ignored for too long: the cost of disconnection, the ache of extinction, the sacredness we’ve forgotten.

The Elephant Series is a tribute to wisdom, to maternal knowing, to the ones who carry memory in their bones. It is a quiet, powerful elegy for the earth and her protectors.

This is the moment before the silence.
Will we listen?

She Dreams

She Dreams Series
Art by Kevin Lee MacKay

She Dreams is a visual meditation on awakening — a four-part journey of turning inward, finding one’s light, and coming home to the self.

In the beginning, she stands with her back to the world within her. She gazes outward, unsure why she feels incomplete, only that something is missing. Her posture holds both strength and distance — a young dreamer searching the horizon, unaware that the answers she longs for do not live out there.

In the second piece, her gaze begins to shift. She listens more deeply. The noise of the world softens, and a quiet voice — one that’s always been there — starts to rise. She does not fully understand it, but something within her stirs. The roots grow deeper. The colours intensify. Her inner light begins to flicker into view.

By the third, she is fully immersed. The dream is no longer something she waits for — it is something she steps into. Surrounded by symbols of nature, spirit, and transformation, she is not just dreaming now… she is becoming. Her heart is no longer a question but a compass.

And in the final image, she is radiant. Whole. At peace. Her older self sits beside her younger one, not to correct her, but to welcome her. There is no more searching. Only presence. Only breath. The dreamer and the becoming one are now the same.

She Dreams is more than a series — it is a remembering.
A call to every woman who once looked away from herself.
A reminder that the journey home is not about finding something new…
but about reclaiming what was always yours.
